“The team tackled the problem with an enthusiastic attitude and comprehensive approach. They demonstrated several skills including a reasoned mathematical analysis of the problem and the ability to rapidly prototype a solution. The end result, though produced to a tight time-scale, more than met the expectations. It was sufficient to demonstrate that a viable solution existed and allowed us to pursue a potentially valuable solution.” — Simon Brusch, Motorola

Motorola were experiencing a problem with frequency allocation in cellular networks. With only so many frequencies available and new antennae being added to the network on a regular basis, city networks were experiencing worsening conditions as nearby antennae started interfering with each other. Periodic complete resets were required to keep the problem from escalating, leading to severe service interruption.

ThinkTank presented Motorola with a solution for dynamically reassigning antennae frequencies. This removed the necessity of resetting the network, estimated by Motorola to be worth several million pounds per annum.
