Roslin Institute is one of the world’s leading centres for studies relating to animal genetics and development. ThinkTank assisted researchers from Roslin Institute to evaluate the feasibility of applying an optimisation technique based upon semi-definite programming to a new large-scale quantitative genetics problem. ThinkTank demonstrated that exploiting the mathematical structure of the problem, the time required to solve it could be reduced from millions of years to hours on a modern desktop computer. This gave Roslin’s researchers confidence that the methodology could form the basis for a feasible industry solution.
